In 1791 Cowford was founded, it got its name due to its location at a narrow point in the river where they crossed cattle. In 1822, a little while after the U.S. acquired Florida they renamed Cowford to Jacksonville after the first military governor of the Florida Territory, Andrew Jackson, who would later go on to be the seventh president of the United States.
