The city of Pittsburgh was named by General John Forbes in 1758 to honor the British statesman, Sir William Pitt. It was first incorporated as a borough in 1794 and then later chartered as a city in 1816.

The flag is based on the Chatham Family coat of arms. William Pitt, the city’s namesake was the first Earl of Chatham.
