It is important to install this light in an area where it gets enough sunshine to charge properly! Please Note: The batteries do not come with any charge in them so the unit will need to be outside in a sunny spot for three days to build up a base charge before installing.

Yes, solar path lights need direct sunlight in order to get a full charge to perform throughout the night. Areas that get ample direct sunlight during the day are where these lights should be installed. Places that should be avoided include underneath places that are shady for the majority of the day or other areas where the light would be blocked from the sun throughout the day.
