In 1764, French traders Pierre Laclede and Rene Auguste Chouteau founded the city of St. Louis. They named it after King Louis IX of France. Its landmark the Gateway Arch has become an iconic image of St. Louis.

Designed by Theodore Sizer, a Yale University professor, this flag is sometimes called the “Three Rivers Flag”. It symbolizes the confluence of the Missouri, Mississippi, and Meramec rivers. The fleur-de-lis symbolizes the city’s French heritage.
